  • GROW at Kazimour Farm & Orchard will host its free fall harvest event on Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2630 Otis Rd.   • Moy's Food From the Streets opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant at 4201 42nd St NE in Cedar Rapids, serving Latin American street food like street tacos and sandwiches. It operates Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. + the space is in the former Pizza World location, marking a new chapter for the local favorite.  KDAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Supporters of a proposed $117-million bond for Cedar Rapids Schools say that three middle schools did not meet ADA requirements for early voting sites in Linn County—pointing to a need for facility upgrades before voters head to the polls on Nov. 4. Kennedy High School already met the standards and will serve as a satellite voting location if the bond passes.  KCRG
  • The Cedar Rapids Community School District ended its three-decade partnership with the Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success after a federal funding threat forced the district to cut ties—resulting in a loss of over $60,000 for the nonprofit. The Academy said it will continue offering after school and summer programs for minority students.  CBS 2 Iowa

  • Iowa colleges are bracing for future delays in grant reviews and funding while they continue offering federal student aid, though officials say answering FAFSA questions might be slowed. Farmers and food programs face uncertainty as some USDA offices close during harvest & key market reports are paused while lawmakers trade blame over the gridlock.  KCRG
  • The City of Cedar Rapids will open applications on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 8 a.m. for its need-based Snow Buddies program that pairs residents 65 or older or with a mobility impairment with local volunteers known as Snow Heroes+ eligibility depends on meeting income guidelines and available volunteer capacity.  CBS 2 Iowa

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the U.S.D.A. announced that H5N1 bird flu was identified in a commercial turkey flock in Calhoun County, prompting Governor Kim Reynolds to declare a disaster. The proclamation permits rapid detection — tracking and containment — through November 1 while officials maintain that poultry products remain safe if cooked properly.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Thursday night, the Cedar Rapids skyline turned pink as Mercy Medical Center and Alliant Energy held their annual Power of Pink celebration at Mercy’s Hall-Perrine Cancer Center with a ribbon-cutting, live entertainment, giveaways, and fireworks. The pink lights will stay on throughout October — a tribute to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a lead-up to the Especially for You Race & Walk set for Sunday at 8 a.m.  CBS 2 Iowa

  • On Wednesday, Cornell College in Mt. Vernon announced it will add a varsity women’s flag football program with Courtney Pennel as head coach. The team will start playing games in spring as it joins other Iowa schools in offering the fast-growing sport.  KDAT
  • University of Iowa forward Hannah Stuelke has been named to the Preseason All-Big Ten First Team—both coaches and media honored her for posting strong averages of 12.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.  KCRG
