  • Central Furniture Rescue and Waypoint are running a blanket drive through November to help Cedar Rapids' winter shelter prepare for colder months — donations of blankets, pillows, cleaning supplies, and other essentials are being accepted. Items can be dropped off at 2275 16th Ave. SW — the drive aims to support those in need this winter.  CBS 2 Iowa

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Odd Mama's Vintage Cafe will open its doors on Monday, October 6th at 7 a.m. in the NewBo District at the old Chrome Horse building, where it will seat nearly 100 customers and serve breakfast and lunch along with art merchandise from local vendors—adding a fresh twist to owner Sierra Damico's established business.  KDAT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Iowa Brewers Guild executive director Noreen Otto said local craft breweries have seen sales flatten out as fewer people gather for drinks—breweries now host creative events like silent book clubs and offer new drink options to boost turnout. Local venues are also supporting community efforts through fundraising events that help sustain the local economy.  Radio Iowa
  • Friday’s jobs report did not come out because the federal shutdown was in effect — economists say other figures show job losses in the Midwest and oil country while Cedar Rapids unemployment jumped from 3.6% to 5.4%. Private surveys also show more job cuts, adding to worries about a weakening labor market.  KCRG
  • Iowa farmers say the USDA report now only shows raw numbers—leaving them without needed analysis to guide crop decisions and manage rising input costs. Farm leaders and economists warn that this change may disadvantage small farmers in an already tough trade market.  CBS 2 Iowa
