Good morning, Cedar Rapids. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 10th of October.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Homemakers Furniture is holding a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Tiffin store on Wednesday, October 15th at 11 a.m.—the store will be the first in Eastern Iowa and will bring about 200 jobs. The large building has a 200,000-square-foot showroom and warehouse and is planned to open in 2028 though it could open sooner.  KDAT
  • Restaurateur Jade Luter — who runs restaurants in Cedar Rapids and Marion — is changing her lineup by moving a sports bar, launching a sequel cafe, and adding a new Mexican restaurant concept. Pregame Brew and Chew reopened at 588 Boyson Rd. on Oct.8 after closing Mas Margaritas, and she will begin building two new spots in Marion next year.  The Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • This week the Cedar Rapids Public Library hosted an arts and crafts event where about a dozen community members bedazzled banned books — using beads and glitter — to raise awareness about censorship and potential future restrictions. Librarians said the event underscores the importance of parental choice as group-led ban requests remain higher than those seen before the pandemic.  KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than a dozen eastern Iowa school districts, including Cedar Rapids CSD, are asking voters to approve millions in bond measures on Nov. 4 since each measure needs 60% approval—this vote will decide funding for school improvements.  CBS 2 Iowa

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Linn County’s Izaak Walton League is running the Nitrate Watch Program that lets residents test water with kits to check nitrate levels and other chemicals near the Cedar River—an important step because levels above ten can be harmful. The program helps well water users and those enjoying local streams gather data that will guide future decisions on water safety.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • A new facility at a Davenport landfill began operating last week to collect methane from decomposing trash and convert it into renewable natural gas that flows into MidAmerican Energy’s pipeline. The plant will supply power to 4,000 Quad City homes annually — using technology from Waga Energy for an initial 20-year term and avoiding about 15,800 tons of CO2 emissions each year.  Radio Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since November 2024, the Landlord and Tenant Success Initiative supported 27 tenants in keeping their housing—using a 12‑month lease, financial incentives, education classes, case management, and quarterly checkups. The program, funded by a $100,000 donation from Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust, plans to enroll more than 30 participants as it adapts to reduced COVID‑19 funds and serves as Iowa’s first tenant incentive model.  KCRG
  • Today, Alliant Energy has delayed filing for a natural gas power plant at Fairfax after residents voiced opposition, and the company is now considering an unincorporated Linn County location near Cedar Rapids—an option mentioned by Linn County Supervisor Kirsten Running-Marquardt.  KDAT

HEALTH NEWS

  • During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lacey Foley, a Finley Hospital mammography technologist, explained that common myths about mammograms—such as high radiation and discomfort preventing early detection—are unfounded. She urged women to start regular screenings around age 40 or earlier if advised by their provider, noting that most breast cancer cases occur in those with no family history.  CBS 2 Iowa
