- ➤ The Cedar Rapids Fire Department will host an open house trunk or treat event on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Families can tour the station, talk with firefighters about the future of firefighting, and take a photo with Wally the arson dog—an event that has grown in attendance each year. - ➤ Several eastern Iowa towns have set trick-or-treat hours for Friday, October 31, with most starting around 5 to 5:30 p.m. and ending between 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. In towns with no set times, families follow a long-standing Iowa tradition—local police urge safety by encouraging visibility, safe crossings, and candy checks. - ➤ Bats in Iowa help control pests by eating thousands of insects nightly — nine species, including endangered ones, are vital for reducing crop damage and lessening the need for chemical pesticides. - ➤ City crews installed the first three beams for the Alliant Energy LightLine pedestrian bridge Monday in Cedar Rapids (city officials said the beams resemble those used by the Iowa Department of Transportation and the bridge will let people cross the Cedar River between Czech Village and New Bohemia). - ➤ Young adults in Iowa and other Corn Belt states have seen a 5% rise in cancers since 2015—experts say farming chemicals, high radon, and nitrate in water may be factors. Gov.
