COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Cedar Rapids Fire Department will host an open house trunk or treat event on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Families can tour the station, talk with firefighters about the future of firefighting, and take a photo with Wally the arson dog—an event that has grown in attendance each year.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Several eastern Iowa towns have set trick-or-treat hours for Friday, October 31, with most starting around 5 to 5:30 p.m. and ending between 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. In towns with no set times, families follow a long-standing Iowa tradition—local police urge safety by encouraging visibility, safe crossings, and candy checks.  CBS 2 Iowa

CULTURE NEWS

  • Actor and conductor Damon Gupton will debut with Orchestra Iowa in Masterworks III on November 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre and on November 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts. He will also meet with students from The Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success after a closed rehearsal—dinner and an open discussion will follow.  CBS 2 Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mackenzie Burnett, a senior and drum major at Clear Creek Amana High School, was named KCRG-TV9 Student of the Month for overcoming hardships and helping others. She led a donation drive after Hurricane Ida and volunteered to rebuild homes in Kentucky — her determination and passion for music guide her plans to become a teacher.  KCRG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bats in Iowa help control pests by eating thousands of insects nightly — nine species, including endangered ones, are vital for reducing crop damage and lessening the need for chemical pesticides. Wildlife experts advise that if a bat enters a home, it should be safely removed using heavy gloves to avoid any risk of rabies.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City crews installed the first three beams for the Alliant Energy LightLine pedestrian bridge Monday in Cedar Rapids (city officials said the beams resemble those used by the Iowa Department of Transportation and the bridge will let people cross the Cedar River between Czech Village and New Bohemia). The bridge will open in 2026.  KCRG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Young adults in Iowa and other Corn Belt states have seen a 5% rise in cancers since 2015—experts say farming chemicals, high radon, and nitrate in water may be factors. Gov. Reynolds announced a $1 million research effort to study if these environmental exposures are linked to the increase.  The Gazette
  • On November 3rd, landmarks across Iowa will light up teal to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease as part of the AFA Light the World in Teal program—over 1,500 sites worldwide, including local spots like the Alliant Energy Tower in Cedar Rapids, will participate. Nearly 7 million Americans are affected by Alzheimer’s, and wearing teal helps support the cause.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Gov. Kim Reynolds spoke at the opening of Radix Recovery—a new drug and alcohol treatment center—housed in the former Higley Mansion in southeast Cedar Rapids.  The Gazette

  • Springville’s Jacobi mother—daughter duo will team up for one more match after sweeping North Cedar on Monday, and the Orioles will face No. 9 Gladbrook-Reinbeck today at 7 p.m. at Benton Community High School.  The Gazette
  • The Clear Creek Amana Clippers beat the Xavier Saints in a sub-state final match on October 28 in Tiffin — winning in three sets to qualify for the State Tournament.  The Gazette
