  • Bread and Buttered Bakery in Cedar Rapids is offering free bagged lunches—featuring a sandwich, fruit, juice box, chips and a cookie—and loaves of honey wheat or white bread amid SNAP delays. The bakery also gives a 15% discount when customers bring a non-perishable food donation and will soon start weekend grab-and-go dinners.  CBS 2 Iowa

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hy-Vee has announced a $30 Thanksgiving meal deal that feeds 6 people and includes turkey, dessert, and traditional ingredients— a gluten free option is available for $50. The offer runs November 3 to 26 and customers can order prepared holiday meal packs for delivery or pickup with pickup available between 8 and 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving.  KCRG

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art received a donation of Oaxacan artwork honoring local art teacher Ellen Barth — a longtime educator at St. Pius Elementary who passed in 2023 — with her husband helping choose the prints after collaborating with artists in Oaxaca. The museum will feature the collection in a dedicated exhibition and future educational programs once its schedule opens after 2027.  CBS 2 Iowa

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Eastern Iowa Airport recorded 128,357 passengers in September—a 3.2% increase from last year. Year-to-date traffic rose 8% and the airport expects more record numbers during the holiday season.  The Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three elementary schools and one middle school were named Iowa Blue Ribbon Schools today in the inaugural program as Governor Kim Reynolds led a ceremony in Des Moines—Prairie Hill Elementary in Cedar Rapids was honored for reducing chronic absenteeism while the other schools showed strong academic progress.  Radio Iowa
  • College Community Schools is testing an AI system—ZeroEyes—that scans cameras for weapons and alerts officials quickly. The district signed a five-year contract that costs $34,800 a year plus a $5,000 fee to add an extra safety layer.  KDAT

  • The Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids is getting emergency structural repairs for water damage and the city approved $132,000 for the work while scheduled events continue as planned — VenuWorks is managing the repair project.  KCRG

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Cafe Beignet — owned by Carl and Tammy Stewart — opened its first brick-and-mortar store at Lindale Mall on Oct. 1 and now serves New Orleans-style treats, Cajun dishes and lunch specials; the couple previously sold 800 beignets at the farmers market to showcase their family recipes and a taste of the South.  The Gazette
