CRIME NEWS

  • A Drake volunteer hockey coach was dismissed after a man wearing a Nazi costume attended a Halloween party at Miss Kitty’s Bar in Clive, sparking public outrage, death threats against the bar owner, & changes to future costume policies.  KCCI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Sunday, UNI education students took part in a poverty simulation where they paid monthly bills like a mortgage, groceries, and utilities to learn the struggles of low income families. The exercise showed that missing a key payment can lead to eviction + it helped them see firsthand how hard it is to cover basic expenses.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Polk County sheriff's detective is raising money for Simpson College memorial scholarships—meant to honor fallen officers Sgt. Beminio and Officer Martin killed in a 2016 ambush—by walking 56 miles in 24 hours and raising over $2,300 so far; he will keep his Venmo open for donations until Friday.  KCCI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Jason Schmit from Parks, Schmit, & Fuller Orthodontics in Cedar Rapids explained that new tools such as TADs, clear aligners, computer-assisted bracket positioning, and 3-D printing have improved patient care over the past decade. These advances have shortened treatment times and made it easier for orthodontists to plan and deliver care accurately.  The Gazette
  • Area doctors now offer less invasive treatments for herniated discs that may help patients avoid major surgery—options include physical therapy, injections, and small outpatient procedures. When surgery is needed, techniques like microdiscectomy allow for smaller cuts and shorter recovery times.  The Gazette
  • Dr. Georgina Aldridge of University of Iowa Health Care said that while some forgetfulness is normal, forgetting key events may be a sign of dementia. More than 16,000 Iowans live with Alzheimer’s and new treatments help slow the disease while local centers provide support for patients and caregivers.  The Gazette
  • Many people suffer from dry eye that makes their eyes feel gritty and blurry, yet many do not get a proper diagnosis. Dr. Liz Gauger from Iowa Eye Center said treatments include using proper eye drops and warm compresses — steps that ease discomfort and help manage the condition.  The Gazette
