COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Iowans facing hunger insecurity saw DMARC food pantries set records by serving over 2,400 people on Monday and nearly 3,000 on Tuesday after SNAP benefits were delayed this week. A federal judge ruled that the program must be fully funded after officials planned to partially fund SNAP—adding to the challenges for those in need.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • The Eastern Iowa Arts Academy food pantry in Cedar Rapids has seen a large increase in food and clothing donations as local support grows amid SNAP funding concerns during the government shutdown. The nonprofit now plans to open public hours & serve more local families & students.  KCRG
  • Hy-Vee launched a program letting customers round up their total at checkout to help local food pantries — every cent stays in the community — and offers free meals for kids along with $3 meals for adults from 4 to 7 p.m. this week as families face rising food costs.  KDAT
  • Linn County Veteran Services is helping local veterans get extra food by offering a boost of up to 50% to their SNAP benefits to meet nutritional needs. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Collins Aerospace said on October 30 that it would lay off three workers as part of a plan to cut costs and realign its resources. Workers received notice on November 4 and the layoffs will begin on December 31 (Iowa WARN lists further details).  KCRG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Starting Nov. 28, Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids will host holiday events for families (the schedule includes Cookies & Cheer on Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Santa Cares on Dec. 7 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and Pet Night on Dec. 8 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.). Liz Scoropanos, VP of Retail Operations at Cherry Hill Programs said the events aim to keep the Christmas spirit alive (she compared them to cherished local traditions).  CBS 2 Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Coe College has partnered with Google's AI for Education Accelerator to train students on AI tools that prepare them for future careers. The college will offer courses like AI in the Business World and K-12 Teacher Training for AI in the spring — faculty already use the technology in classroom work and research.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amid a government shutdown that left many without SNAP payments, Linn County Veterans Services Offices now offer veterans Fareway gift cards for up to 50% of their usual SNAP benefits — the cards cannot buy alcohol, tobacco or lottery tickets and the program will be reevaluated every two weeks to adjust for local resources.  KCRG

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Abbe Center for Community Mental Health opened its new 31,000-square-foot facility at 615 Fifth Street SE—downtown Cedar Rapids on Thursday, where it now offers therapy, primary care, crisis intervention and peer support services. The center moved from its former northwest location to improve care for vulnerable patients—helping it meet growing mental health needs through expanded community support.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • More than 350 Cedar Rapids residents attended Thursday's Go Red for Women luncheon that raised $250,000 to support women’s cardiovascular research + education and advocacy.   • A contest to win free tickets for the 2nd annual Mac N’ Mingle will run until November 12th, offering Cedar Rapids residents a chance to sample mac and cheese recipes from top local restaurants. The tasting event will be held at Northpoint — located at 621 Center Point Road NE — on November 15th starting at noon before the Iowa Hawkeye game begins at 2:30 p.m.  KDAT
