  • Today, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Corridor is providing free healthy meals and snacks to every child in its programs as it fights childhood hunger through participation in the federal Child and Adult Care Food Program — ensuring that children from all households receive nutritious food at no cost.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Aiden Washburn, a former Hawkeye Kid Captain, died peacefully at the University of Iowa Hospital on Nov. 9 in Iowa City at age 9—he loved football, collecting tennis shoes, and making YouTube videos.  CBS 2 Iowa

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The 2025 Cedar Rapids Local Christmas Calendar gives residents vouchers worth over $350 from 25 area businesses and restaurants. The $45 calendar will be delivered in 2 to 3 days and includes vouchers valid until March 31—making it a holiday treat for locals.  KDAT
  • Caribbean Kitchen owner Patrick Rashed, known as Jamaican Pat, announced on Nov. 5 that his restaurant will close on Dec. 31 after nearly 14 years serving Cedar Rapids locals. He urged residents to enjoy a final jerk chicken bowl before the closure — while future plans remain undisclosed.  The Gazette

  • Future healthcare workers at Kirkwood Community College trained on Tuesday morning at the Katz Family Healthcare Simulation Center—students in Nursing, Paramedic and Respiratory Therapy programs worked together to stabilize simulated patients and practice fast decisions.  CBS 2 Iowa

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monarch Research’s Planting Forward program has planted nearly 120,000 native trees across Linn County since 2020. In October, 71 local groups and hundreds of volunteers distributed 21,990 trees — marking the most successful fall planting season to date.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Many KCRG viewers saw the northern lights Tuesday night due to a geomagnetic storm and clear skies over eastern Iowa—weather that may have allowed another viewing Wednesday night if conditions remained favorable.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local authorities say the Iowa DOGE task force has recommended ending the 40-year Iowa Industrial New Jobs Training program run by community colleges and replacing it with a $30 million workforce training fund managed by Iowa Workforce Development — a move they claim will modernize funding methods. Leaders at Kirkwood and local businesses stressed that the current model has helped fill jobs and build skills, a benefit that might change if the new plan is adopted.  KCRG
  • The Iowa Board of Regents will vote today to approve bylaws for the University of Iowa’s new Center for Intellectual Freedom — Regents Nancy Dunkel and Robert Cramer raised concerns about keeping leadership local.   • Downtown Cedar Rapids drivers will face delays today as city officials close the 1st Avenue Bridge for flood control system testing — the bridge is located between 1st Street East and 1st Street West and crews expect the work to take one day with detour signs posted.  CBS 2 Iowa

HEALTH NEWS

  • New state health data shows that 80,242 Iowans received the measles vaccine between January and October, marking a 23% jump from last year after a measles outbreak in Texas—officials reported at least eight confirmed measles cases this year.  KCCI

SPORTS NEWS

  • Live high school football semifinal games are airing from the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls on KCRG 9.2 & the KCRG Apps on mobile devices and smart TVs. Wednesday's games are finished, while today's Class A game at 10:00 a.m. and upcoming matchups on Friday and Saturday will decide which teams compete for a state title.  KCRG
  • Cash Parks, a junior quarterback for Cedar Rapids Xavier, survived a head-on collision last fall and now leads his undefeated, top-ranked team as they prepare for tonight’s state playoff semifinal against Newton—he has thrown 102 passes for 1,921 yards and 26 touchdowns this season. He credits his hard work in the weight room and the team’s depth with his growth on the field.  The Gazette
