COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army of Cedar Rapids reminded residents that registration for its annual Toy & Ham Assistance Program closes Monday, November 18, as the program offers free toys for children and a holiday ham for Linn County families. Families with children ages 0 to 14 may apply for both benefits while those without eligible children can register to receive a ham only using online applications or by phone.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Today, The District CR in Cedar Rapids partnered with The Amana Colonies Bakery to serve 200 meals to nonprofits Willis Dady and Mission of Hope as the restaurant cooks a new meal each week and the bakery supplies desserts and bread. The restaurant will host a food drive and continue donations through November and December—helping meet needs like heavy winter coats—before reevaluating its plans.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Together We Achieve is collecting donations for its sixth annual Turkey Time Together food box drive (with matching contributions up to $15,000) to help families facing food insecurity ahead of Thanksgiving.  CBS 2 Iowa

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Caribbean Kitchen — a popular Caribbean eatery run by Jamaican Pat — will close its doors on December 31st after 14 years in business, and Cedar Rapids fans can visit NewBo City Market to enjoy its famous jerk chicken before it closes. This decision marks the end of a long-standing favorite in our local market.  KDAT
  • Last night the president signed a federal law that ends the government shutdown and limits THC in hemp products to less than a half milligram per container — a rule change that may force Iowa CBD businesses to adjust from the current limit of 10 milligrams. Sellers have a year to work with lawmakers — over 450 companies face risks if the limit remains unchanged.  Radio Iowa

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Theatre Cedar Rapids opens its production of Disney’s Frozen — a large-scale musical featuring a working turntable to move actors and scenery, drawing families to the landmark event.   • Museum guests can meet Iowa artists and buy original artwork at the annual store market held Sunday, Nov 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 410 3rd Ave SE—free gallery admission is offered that day.  The Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • RELCO—a Wabtec Company—will close on New Year's Eve and lay off 34 employees after workers in Cedar Rapids were notified on Tuesday, according to Iowa WARN.  KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Cedar Rapids School District faced financial problems after losing 622 students and a bond vote failed, so it may cut staff and merge schools. District officials are forming a committee to get input from parents and staff—planning a new budget as enrollment continues to drop.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa Health and Human Services said full November SNAP benefits are being loaded onto EBT cards and should be available to all recipients by Friday. The 44-day shutdown led to a surge at local food pantries—officials expect the need for support to remain higher for weeks.  KCCI
  • Food aid advocates delivered a petition with over 600 signatures to Gov. Reynolds’ office on Wednesday, urging the state to join the federal SUN Bucks program next summer so that more children can receive food when school meals are not available—arguing that the Healthy Kids Iowa pilot leaves many families in need.  KCRG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mercy Medical Center is hosting two free clinics to assist with health insurance enrollment, with events scheduled on Saturday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Dec. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.—the clinics will be held at Mercy Cedar Rapids’ Hallagan Education Center where trained professionals will help with Marketplace applications and renewals.  CBS 2 Iowa
