Good morning, Cedar Rapids. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 22nd of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A North Liberty man honored his late wife’s legacy—he set up a kindness box outside his home for people to drop off food, toys, and gifts. Dave McGlaughlin started the box after Jeanna passed away last June, and he hopes it keeps her caring spirit alive.  KCRG
  • Dozens of families gathered on Friday at the Linn County Juvenile Courthouse for National Adoption Day as 14 children were officially adopted into forever homes—local organizations supported the event with refreshments and activities.  CBS 2 Iowa

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Holiday travel is increasing at Eastern Iowa Airport as thousands of people fly amid growing Thanksgiving plans; despite a recent government shutdown that delayed flights elsewhere, the facility remains efficient. Airport director Pam Hinman said a fully staffed TSA and air traffic controllers kept delays to a minimum—travelers are advised to arrive 90 minutes early and follow TSA guidelines.  KWWL
  • Farmers who sold grain to Hansen-Mueller before Nov. 17 have until March 17 to file written indemnity claims with the state after the Nebraska-based dealer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The Iowa Grain Indemnity Fund—currently at $12.6 million—will pay up to 90% of unpaid grain sales up to a $400,000 maximum.  KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting next July, a new policy will let graduate students borrow up to $20,500 and professional students up to $50,000 — but nursing programs are not included, which raises concerns at local schools like the University of Iowa and Mount Mercy University. University representatives urge students to advocate for policy changes so that enough nurses will be available to meet local needs.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids and Marion city councils approved donations to local food pantries less than a week after a government shutdown delayed SNAP benefits — Marion set aside $15,000 for five pantries while Cedar Rapids provided $25,000 to support the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program. Marion has also teamed with HACAP for a month-long food drive to help residents facing high food needs before Thanksgiving.  The Gazette
  • Today, Linn County’s overnight winter weather shelter opens at 1017 12th Ave SW in Cedar Rapids to offer a last resort for those needing winter refuge, operating each night until March 31 from 4 p.m. until early morning. The facility was renovated (with a new fire alarm, sprinkler system, elevator and accessible ramp funded by American Rescue Plan Act money) to boost safety and capacity.  The Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Iowa reported its first flu death of the season when an older adult from southwest Iowa died—officials urge residents to get vaccinated, stay home when sick and follow precautions to slow the spread of flu, COVID-19 and RSV. Health leaders said flu activity is still low but warned that holiday gatherings might raise risks of transmission.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • A recent Leapfrog Group report shows that no Iowa hospitals earned an A grade for patient safety, and Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids got an F—its non-participation automatically lowered its score. The report finds one in four hospital patients face safety issues and notes that hospitals in larger systems tend to perform better.  CBS 2 Iowa

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Iowans are advised by the Better Business Bureau’s spokeswoman Lisa Schiller to shop for sales, use coupons, and plan a simple potluck dinner to keep costs down for Thanksgiving next week. She recommends checking pantries and having guests share dishes to manage expenses.  Radio Iowa
