- ➤ New owners are breathing life into the historic Sykora Bakery building in Czech Village by opening LoKey Hat Co.—a western-inspired hat shop that honors the building’s legacy while planning further updates. Future efforts will keep the landmark true to Cedar Rapids’ community spirit. KCRG
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Indian Creek Nature Center was awarded a $25,000 grant from Athletic Brewing Co.'s Two for the Trails program to restore Lynch Wetland, a 6.3-acre natural area used for outdoor education. The work includes removing invasive plants, felling hazardous trees, repairing a windmill and resurfacing the trail in spring 2026. CBS 2 Iowa

- ➤ Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags across Iowa to half-staff to honor two Iowa National Guard soldiers killed Saturday in Syria (Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard from Marshalltown and Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar from Grimes). Flags will remain lowered until sunset on the final day of interment. CBS 2 Iowa
- ➤ A retired Iowa National Guard sergeant major from Marshalltown said the recent Syria attack that killed two soldiers brought back painful memories of a similar ambush in 2011 that claimed Cedar Rapids native Sgt. Terry Pasker’s life (he credited his quick reaction to rigorous training). KCCI
- ➤ In Monday night's meeting, the Linn County Planning and Zoning Commission recommended rezoning the closed Duane Arnold plant so NextEra can restart it for Google’s data centers. The change would help create nearly 400 jobs & yield over $2 million in tax revenue if later approved. KCRG
