- ➤ Cedar Rapids broke ground on the $275-million Cedar Crossing Casino and Entertainment Center after winning a state license in February; Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell noted that the project was once seen as a long shot. The casino is planned to open in December next year. Radio Iowa
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Linn County Solid Waste Agency says new appliances like fridges, washers, and dryers cost $10 for disposal while smaller ones are free and cardboard must be broken down, and actual Christmas trees and lights can be recycled or composted though flocked trees and wrapping paper are not accepted. - ➤ Alliant Energy will stop burning coal at Prairie Creek on Dec. 31 as officials review the plan to switch the power plant to natural gas. Residents can file online comments next week and attend a two-hour public hearing on Jan. 28 while experts expect higher emissions. Radio Iowa
- ➤ The Cedar Rapids Linn County Solid Waste Agency is giving advice on handling holiday decorations this season—residents should drop off old Christmas lights free at County Home Road and bring Christmas trees to the 8th Street Southwest drop-off for a $15 fee if city pick-up is unavailable. KCRG
- ➤ The Iowa Department of Transportation launched a new tool in its 511 app that lets users report traffic, road hazards, and flooding on DOT roads. iOS users can send reports with Siri and Android users will soon have a hands-free option. CBS 2 Iowa
