If you work at or near Collins Aerospace, here's what's public. The company posted a "mass layoff" notice on Iowa's WARN website on Oct. 29, and the 31 positions end Nov. 30. The Des Moines Register reports employees were notified that same day.

Collins cited the need to "reduce costs and optimize our organizational structure" but didn't say which jobs are going. Corridor Business Journal counts several small to moderate job reductions across Iowa, including 102 workers in Cedar Rapids in June 2025.

  • Parent company: RTX, which also includes Pratt & Whitney and Raytheon
  • Collins worldwide: about 80,000 employees, about 9,000 in Iowa
  • 2025 adjusted operating profit: $4.9 billion, up from 2024

This layoff is smaller than Collins' Cedar Rapids cut in June 2025

Google will pay up to $242,323 for an independent Linn County water study

If you've been following Google's plans near Palo, the county is now getting its own read on water. Linn County supervisors approved an agreement on Wed., Oct. 28, and Google will pay up to $242,323 for a study by , an independent engineering firm the county selected.

Google has no say over the study's scope or final results.

“Google will not review the results while the study is underway and will not see the results before the public.”

Charlie Nichols, Linn County Planning & Development Director

The study will look at water use, future demand, drought risks and gaps in data, including the Cedar River and its alluvial aquifer, in average years and in extended drought. It's part of the county's work during its data center moratorium.

Linn County leaders say the study could help inform water policy but wouldn't commit the county to any decision on Palo.

  • Results expected: March 2027, released publicly
  • Google's payment covers the study's first phase
  • Who chose the firm: Linn County, not Google

Linn County's water study runs from a moratorium to March results

  1. July 2026Linn County adopts a moratorium on new large-scale data centers.
  2. Oct. 22A Google manager speaks at a town hall at the Palo Community Center.
  3. Oct. 28Supervisors approve the agreement with Google for the study.
  4. March 2027Linn County expects the study to be complete.

RAIN MAN’S IOWA ALMANAC: As we kick off November, the trees are preparing for their final spectacular performance of the year, while the rain is aggressively auditioning to become snow.

“Once again, Eastern Iowa's climate is demonstrating that consistency is wildly overrated. Halloween and its overnight aftermath treated scenic southeast Cedar Rapids to a crisp 3/8th inch of rain, perfectly setting the stage for a first day of November that promises to be wonderfully windy and stubbornly cloudy…”

The Wrap

A new neighborhood tavern just moved into a spot with some history. The Crow's Nest opened this weekend in the old Gilligan's Pub N Grub on 1st Ave NW, and the owners painted over the big Gilligan's Island mural that faced the parking lot. KHAK reports there are still more updates to come. Bon voyage, Skipper.
